Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are DLC in Injustice 2

The four brothers are shell-surfing their way into NetherRealms’ fighting game

A bombshell was dropped when the conclusion of the Injustice 2 World Championship revealed a new trailer for the upcoming Fighter Pack 3 DLC. Not only were Enchantress and the Atom officially revealed, but the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are making a grand comeback for the game. The release date and price for this pack is unannounced, although Atom will be available as an early access character starting December 12. However, for players who own the Ultimate Edition of Injustice 2, which runs at $99, this pack will be free.

In the Fighter Pack 3 trailer, the fighting styles of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were not clear, although it was hinted that they would be played as a team. This led to fan speculation, such as one turtle being controlled with the others assisting him via offstage attacks, or the turtles associating with a different costume for the same character (akin to how the Koopalings were alternative colors for Bowser Jr in Super Smash Brothers 4). Regardless, Injustice 2 fans were ecstatic about the reveal, since the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have not been in a fighting game since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up, a PlayStation 2 and Wii title released back in 2009.

The latest console game featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mutants in Manhattan, received mixed opinions from critics. Released in 2016, the game was developed by Platinum Games, the same team who developed Nier: Automata, a 2017 action role-playing game on the PlayStation 4, and Bayonetta 2, a 2014 beat em up role-playing game on the Wii U. Despite the game also being an action beat em up, it fell short of expectations due to its bleak environments and repetitive combat. Thus, their most recent appearances did not help the turtle’s gaming portfolio. However, Injustice 2 was praised for its solid gameplay and content, making the turtles’ appearance favorable. If they bring a new gameplay mechanic to the arena, it may cause interest in another TMNT game, made by the developers of Injustice 2. In other words, their reputation may be saved by Injustice 2’s success. At the same time, their inclusion to the roster may be too left of field for some fans. Being in a game where the characters are portrayed realistically may clash visually with the animated group of turtles. Regardless, players new to the TMNT or longtime fans of the series have something to look forward to with the additional content Injustice 2 has to offer. To put it in their lingo, it’s “Way Past Cool!”

Character Pack 3 for Injustice 2 has yet to have a release date, but Atom will be available as an early access character on December 12.
