Nintendo Directs are always full of surprises. After being delayed a week, Nintendo fans were eager to see just what surprises were waiting inside the September Nintendo Direct. Here’s what the TSG staff had to say on Twitter about some of the announcements made during the Direct using the hashtag #DailyHotTake.
Luigi’s Mansion 3
A surprising start, but given the upcoming Luigi’s Mansion remake it all made sense.
When the footage started, I literally thought this was a 3DS port because the graphics are so lazy. It's disappointing because if Nintendo isn't putting much effort into the art direction, they're probably not putting in their best to the game design either. #DailyHotTake https://t.co/KqGXVsyKcL

Mario Tennis Aces
The staff wasn’t very hot on this game, but at least one good thing came from it.
How about instead of new characters, y'all add a second song to the game… #DailyHotTake #NintendoDirect https://t.co/3wSc6gwsUV

Shy Guy, Petey Piranha, and Paratroopa will definitely bring me back to #mariotennisaces!#DailyHotTake

Nintendo Switch Online
Considering that we’ve been able to enjoy online games for free on Switch for a year and a half now, Nintendo really needed to justify us buying their new service.
Nintendo Switch Online isn't all that impressive; consumers shouldn't have to pay for Cloud Saves. But it's also very cheap, especially with the family plan so…. #DailyHotTake #NintendoDirect https://t.co/U1iDYySZaS

A lower pricetag can't make up for the continuing, bewildering decisions behind Nintendo's imminent online service. #DailyHotTake https://t.co/Jeg3tmbh7e

Nintendo Switch Online trailer had great animation, but the service still seems a bit underwhelming. NES games library is great though and it's very affordably priced. Though I'd probably subscribe just to play Smash online anyway.#DailyHotTake

Detachable NES Controllers
Nintendo revealed the first detachable controllers for Switch that aren’t the traditional joy-con. This gives me hope that we could get GameCube version for the serious Smash players or even an actual virtual console.
At first glance, these NES joy-con are really cool. But they only work on NES games when detached. Perhaps there will be a SNES version later on that work for a wider variety of games. That's probably a much better investment. #DailyHotTake #NintendoDirect https://t.co/4Ml0xggnOY

$60 for NES controllers? Nostalgia ain't worth THAT much. Nintendo. #DailyHotTake

Splatoon 2 revamps Splatfests among other news
Splatfests are changing for the better. Now casual players and more serious players can separate themselves into matches that suit their playstyles better. I've wanted this for years as the matchmaking has been consistently inconsistent. #DailyHotTake https://t.co/xljtKSsmt4

Diablo III
I remember playing Diablo 3 when it first came out and loving it. The game has only gotten better with time (and updates) and I am surprised at how excited I am to return to the loot grind and carry #DiabloSwitch around with me wherever I go!#DailyHotTake

Popular tabletop games coming to Switch
I've always loved the ideas of converting table top games to board games. If you can retain the flow and feeling of playing with an actual board, I'll snag this for my next game night. #DailyHotTake #NintendoDirect https://t.co/p0QBPDwYHl

And with Catan, Munchkin, Carcassonne, Pandemic, and LotR the Living Card Game, the Nintendo Switch is officially establishing itself as the only entertainment device you will ever need.#DailyHotTake

Civilization VI develops its way to Switch
Wow. Wow. Wow. Everyone is trying to get on this Switch hype train. Civilization appearing on a console, no less, an underpowered Nintendo handheld means the devs really believe in the little console that could. Not sure if it will pay off. #DailyHotTake #NintendoDirect https://t.co/6T7MChgzkf

Final Fantasy, Kirby, and other ports/remakes
Nintendo getting some of Final Fantasy's most historic entries is a BIG deal. Maybe I'll even find the three years It'll take me to go back and play FF7, 9, X, and XII.#DailyHotTake

One of the best Kirby games ever made. Why are all the good ports coming to 3DS when the ones I'd actually buy are being stranded on 3DS?! #DailyHotTake https://t.co/VzmBtuog5w
— Host Marcus (@TopShelfMarcus) September 17, 2018
I get why they ported this, I'm just not into it. Admittedly, the new playable characters seem interesting but these games are so generic that even thinking about playing them again bores me. #DailyHotTake #NintendoDirect https://t.co/DX7NGMbed5

My weeb friend is obsessed with this game. If it's appropriately priced for a game this old, I think I'll pick this one up! #DailyHotTake #NintendoDirect #twewy https://t.co/oWTVrgAh2Y

I never played The World Ends with You. Do I need to play The World Ends with you? I think I need to play The World Ends with You.

Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Switch Bundle
New bundle approaching! This upcoming bundle will include a #NintendoSwitch system, Super #SmashBrosUltimate branded Joy-Con controllers and dock, as well as a download code for the game. Available 11/2. pic.twitter.com/x4tXUngnOk
— Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) September 13, 2018
Okay Nintendo, why is the bundle for your most colorful, outlandish series just black and grey? The Smash Bundle barely looks any different from the standard console.#DailyHotTake

Isabelle joins Smash Bros. roster
The most hype Smash announcements are the ones nobody could have predicted (RE: Wii Fit Trainer). Smash is at its best when it gets weird and adding Isabelle to the roster definitely qualifies. #DailyHotTake #NintendoDirect https://t.co/qyQYdhPxqA

Why is she a fighter in…aww she's so adorable. Okay, I'm in! #DailyHotTake https://t.co/S5FUAbCpak

New Animal Crossing announced
This is the game many fans were waiting for. Nintendo faked us out by showing Isabelle, then introducing her as the next Smash character. We gave up hope that a new AC game would be announced after that, but Nintendo double-crossed fans in the best way possible.
It was only a matter of time. Great announcement to close out the #NintendoDirect with! #DailyHotTake https://t.co/SxHuhqSbFc
— Top Shelf Gaming (@TopShelfGaming) September 17, 2018
And close the #NintendoDirect with #AnimalCrossingswitch announcement. Great cap to a very dense set of announcements. Though I wish I could join the loyal fans for whom this is a BIG deal, for me, it'll have to be something very special to justify the purchase.#DailyHotTake

Overall Nintendo Direct thoughts
Marcus was a little disappointed at first, noting the massive volume of ports and remakes and lack of new titles. The ports that were most interesting to him were stranded on the outdated 3DS while the ones coming to Switch he found to be less enticing. Evan had a more favorable outlook on this Nintendo Direct.
Wow #NintendoDirect was packed with news. It's a great signal for what's to come, but very little blew me away. Highlight: Luigi's Mansion 3 and Asmodee board games announcements.
Low: No new Fire Emblem: Three Houses news. #DailyHotTake— Evan Maier-Zucchino (@emzsilversound) September 14, 2018
