Samsung Releases Its VR Headset

Samsung released their Gear VR Headset. Customers eager to get their hands on a VR headset before next year’s release of the Oculus Rift, Playstation VR, and HTC Vive can pick up Samsung’s VR headset for as cheap as $99. The catch is that the headset comes at this price only if you already own one of the following Samsung smart phones: the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, or S6 Edge+. The headset is powered by these smartphones, and there are already a fair amount of games released for it in addition to functioning as a “portable movie theater”!

I think Samsung has made a really smart move by releasing their headset way ahead of its competitors, and the price they’ve released it as is pretty remarkable. Next year, consumers are going to see a wave of virtual reality headsets hit the market, probably at prices much higher than $99. Samsung’s iteration gives consumers an affordable option, and the reviews coming out are generally positive. The Gear VR headset’s downfall, though, comes with the fact that it requires a Samsung phone to operate, creating a rift between consumers who do and do not own an eligible phone. While this upsets me a little bit, I think it excites me that the future of VR is finally here, and I’m excited to see where it takes us in the near future.

So what do you guys think? Was this a smart decision on Samsung’s part? Are you going to be picking up a Gear VR headset? Or are you waiting for one of its competitors to release? Let me know in the comments below!
