Nintendo Spring Partner Preview: Indies and Smaller Third Party Games Coming to Wii U and 3DS

Nintendo recently posted a Spring Partner Preview for the Wii U and 3DS on their YouTube Channel, highlighting a few indie and 3rd party titles coming to both platforms this summer. Hosted by Damon Baker, a member of the company’s Publisher and Developer Relations team, the short video focused mostly on two specific titles, Tumblestone and Axiom Verge, before ending with a quick sizzle reel of more titles.

Tumblestone, a new game by the Quantum Astrophysicists Guild, is an action puzzle game for the Wii U  that hearkens back to classic action puzzlers of the SNES era. Similar in style to Metroid and other NES platform adventure games the second featured title, Axiom Verge, was received positively by both critics and fans when it released across other platforms last year. See them both in action below.

The sizzle reel at the end also showed several other titles, both small and large. A mix of new and old, there seemed to be something for all types of fans. Hopefully, more news will be coming shortly about several of these intriguing titles. Other games shown include:

  • Shantae Half Genie Hero by WayForward
  • Super Meat Boy by BitWorks
  • Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment
  • Noitu Love: Devolution by MP2 games
  • Jotun: Valhalla Edition by Thunder Lotus Games
  • Zarvot by SnowHydra Games
  • Ectoplaza by Syndicate Atomic
  • Corpse Party by XSEED games
  • The Battle Cats Pop! By PONOS Corporation
  • Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 by INTI CREATES
  • 7th Dragon III Code: VFD by SEGA
  • Lifespeed by Wee Man Studios
  • Sega 3D Classics Edition by SEGA
  • Monster Hunter Generations by Capcom

As always, it’s nice to see Nintendo highlight indie developers coming to their respective platforms. Although many titles are late compared to other platform releases, it’s still a positive sign that Nintendo continues to court these developers, and hopefully offers a better prospect of third party developer relations for their upcoming mysterious new platform Nintendo NX. With any luck, we’ll have a new Nintendo Direct coming soon that will show how Nintendo plans to bolster their summer line-up with their 1st party offerings. (Crosses figures for Mother 3 in honor of the title’s 10th Anniversary!)
