Ports and Shorts from Gamescom 2018 #DailyHotTake

From Spider-Man to Luigi. There’s a lot to be excited for.

We don’t have a sufficient budget to go to Germany, but we do have Twitter. Here are our the team’s hot takes from Gamescom 2018. Remember you can always follow along throughout the week on Twitter by checking out the hashtag #DailyHotTake.

New Spider-Man Trailer

At this point, we’re all just waiting for Spider-Man to come out already. While this trailer was great, we’ve seen enough. Just two weeks away!

Life is Strange 2

After the free release of The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit after E3, a game set in the Life is Strange universe, it was only a matter of time before we got our first big look at Life is Strange 2. This new entry into the series features two brothers on the run after they get tangled up in an “incident”. The story so far seems to want to tackle themes such as immigration, a hot issue in America right now. We’ll see how the developers handle such a sensitive topic when episode one drops later this year.

Luigi’s Mansion comes to Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo Switch has a bad reputation of being a “port machine” but this is a port we’d actually want. Sadly, the Luigi’s Mansion remake has been announced for the 7-year-old Nintendo 3DS. Hm…

Cyberpunk 2077 makes a transphobic tweet

Many people were enraged the Cyberpunk account made a “DId you just assume my gender” joke. The account quickly removed that tweet and issued an apology. While this apology was sufficient for Marcus, a much wiser Devin pointed out that given the harmful nature of the joke, the non-apology was more problematic than the joke itself.

While assuming good intent is important, it is vital that we hold people accountable for their words and educate them on why some language can literally be fatal to others. See Marcus and Devin’s discussion below, and for an even deeper dive on this topic, listen to the cast of Waypoint Radio give more nuanced hot takes.

Blizzard releases a new Overwatch short featuring D.va.

New Overwatch shorts are always a rallying point for current, lapsed, and ancillary fans. This new short finally gives us some insight into the private life of the Korean celebrity D.va. We get to see her working on her mech and also the origins of her self-destruct ultimate move. It’s as epic as you’d expect from an Overwatch short. This was one of our favorite announcement from Gamescom 2018.
