Playing Miitomo with Celebrities at the Hollywood Comedy Shorts Film Festival!

I attended the first ever Hollywood Comedy Shorts Film Festival hosted at the historic TCL Chinese Theater this past weekend. The event, which took place on Apr. 15-16, featured dozens of short comedy films created by budding filmmakers and seasoned veterans like Disney Frozen’s Josh Gadd across a variety of categories from Web Series to Cringe Comedy.

comedy shorts festival red carpet

Since the entire Top Shelf Gaming staff is currently obsessed with Nintendo’s new app Miitomo, I decided to play it with the actors and filmmakers walking the red carpet at the opening of the comedy film festival. In Miitomo, players create an avatar of themselves and interact with other users by asking them sometimes serious sometimes silly questions. I jotted down my favorites and asked the celebrities to choose a few at random. Here are some of the hilarious highlights, including an interview with Stephen Kramer Glickman from Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush.

Celebrity Miitomo at the Hollywood Comedy Shorts Film Festival

jj dunlap at the hollywood comedy shorts film festival

JJ Dunlap is the lead of the comedy horror short Tampoon. He says his favorite part of the movie was working with the director, whom I also interviewed, and being on a set that used 100% practical effects. JJ was the guinea pig for my Miitomo experiment. I’m glad he was such a great sport, because if my interview with  him didn’t go well I might have just packed up shop and probably just played Miitomo alone in the bathroom as I cried about my inadequacy as a journalist.

Imagine flowers booming in your mind’s eye…How many flowers do you see?

JJ: Seven.

Marcus: Whoa! Not bad. That’s the number of lovers you’ll have in your life.

JJ: Don’t tell my girlfriend. She’s here tonight.

What do you think my favorite food is?

JJ: Your favorite food?

Marcus: Yes.

JJ: A chicken avocado pita with hummus.

Marcus: That’s a very SoCal thing to say. It’s actually tacos, which I guess is also very SoCal.

JJ: (laughs) Yeah I guess it was on my mind because I just went to this weird hipster Mediterranean place.

What are three things you look for in a partner?

JJ: Confidence, empathy, and one good joke. It can be a bad joke that she even knows its bad. It’s funny because of how bad it is.

Marcus: Can you think of a joke a girl’s said to you to make you fall in love with them?

JJ: Actually, I love my girlfriend’s go-to joke.

Marcus: Lay it on me!

JJ: What did the dolphins who were friends with the Orca say-

At that moment his girlfriend walked by.

Girlfriend: Hey are you telling my joke?!

JJ: Yeah!

Girlfriend: Well you’re saying it wrong. What did the dolphin say to the Orca that was running late?

Marcus: Hmm. I don’t know. Tell me.

Girlfriend: (strokes chin) Whale, whale, whale…

Marcus: (laughs hysterically) That’s awful! She’s a keeper!

director jeanne jo at the Hollywood Comedy Shorts Film Festival

Jeanne “Jeannie” Jo screened her film Tampoon which won Best Cringe Comedy at the festival. Out of everyone I interviewed, she was the only one who’d previously heard of Miitomo. Even still she hadn’t played it yet, so I had one chance to convince her that it was this year’s killer app.

Imagine flowers booming in your mind’s eye…How many flowers do you see?

Jeannie: A thousand!

Marcus: Yikes!

Jeannie: What?!

Marcus: The answer to that question is supposed to mean how many lovers you’ll have in your life.

Jeannie: Oh no! I better get crackin’!

What memory embarrasses you just thinking about it?

Jeannie: You know that dream where you go to school and you’re in your underwear?

Marcus: No!

Jeannie: Yeah, it was terrible.

Marcus: Well, what happened?

Jeannie: You know, I got caught naked in front of my gym class after I got out of the shower.

Has anything ever happened to you that made you really respect someone? If so, what was it?

Jeannie: I respect so many people. One time I saw someone get shamed by a speaker. She shrugged it off and sat through the whole thing and walked out afterwards with her head held high.

What are three things you look for in a partner?

Jeannie: A sense of humor, honesty, and a penis.

Marcus: …(blushing)

Little did she know that she was being interviewed by her perfect match.

luis the child star of Huey Dewey and Luis

Luis was the youngest actor on the red carpet that evening and doubtlessly the cutest. He was the star of the short Huey Dewey and Luis, a film about the antics of a mischievous kid and his puppy companion. He was accompanied by his neighbor who played the father figure in the film and another man who I assumed was his actual father.

Imagine flowers booming in your mind’s eye…How many flowers do you see?

Luis: Three.

Marcus: Whoa! That’s how many girlfriends you’re gonna have.

Luis: (smiles bashfully) I don’t know about that.

Marcus: Well when you’re dressed like that I’m sure all the girls flock to you.

What did you have for dinner last night?

Luis: McDonald’s!

Marcus: What did you get?

Luis: A kids meal with extra pickles and an emoji toy.

Marcus: Was it the poop one?

Luis: No it was the “LOL”.

Marcus: Aw. The poop one is my favorite.

If someone packed you lunch. What would you hope to find inside?

Luis: Lunchables!

Marcus: Like the ones with the pizzas?

Luis: Yeah! The large one with bacon!

Co-star: Wow. You guys really know your Lunchables.

He’s darn right I do.

Marcus: Okay well that’s all the questions I have for you today. Thanks for stopping by!

Luis: That was a cool interview!

He’s darn right it was.

stephen kramer glickman at the hollywood comedy shorts film festival

If you’re around my age or have tween kids then you probably recognize Stephen Kramer Glickman as the band manager from Nickelodeon’s hit show Big Time Rush. His short film Small Business was my personal favorite when it screened the first night of the festival. Small Business follows Gary Middlewater, the founder and CEO of Doodles, Inc., a design agency staffed entirely by children. It’s clear that he’s great with kids given his film and his work on Nickelodeon. But none of that explains why his Miitomo avatar looks nothing like him.

Imagine flowers booming in your mind’s eye…How many flowers do you see?

Stephen: Three.

Marcus: That’s the number of lovers you’ll have in your life.

Stephen: Wow…interesting.

He did not find this fact very interesting.

What do you think my favorite food is?

Stephen: Thai food?

Marcus: What about me makes you think that.

Stephen: I don’t know. It just seems like something you’d like.

If someone packed you lunch. What would you hope to find inside?

Stephen: A churro.

Marcus: Just a churro?

Stephen: Yeah, like a big long churro. That would be the greatest.

A visionary.

raquel pomplun at the hollywood comedy shorts film festival

Raquel Pomplun is one of the co-stars of the Chocolate Milk series on YouTube. In addition, she’s hosted many live and scripted events and acted in several projects. She also has a vibrant modeling career and is an Instagram influencer. Some of you might recognize her as 2013’s Playmate of the Year.

Imagine flowers booming in your mind’s eye…How many flowers do you see?

Raquel: Hundreds.

The answer you choose is apparently how many lovers you’ll have in your lifetime.

Raquel: (covers mouth) That’s impossible! (giggles) I’m already married!

Have you ever gotten a gift from your parents that you were really disappointed with? If so, what?

Raquel: I don’t think so, no. They can pick out my needs very easily. They know me very well.

When you think Ninja, what first comes to mind?

Raquel: Crazy eyes!

Marcus: Why is that?

Raquel: Because that’s all you see.

What do you think my favorite food is?

Raquel: Oh. Hmm…(thoughtfully rubs hands together) Burritos?

Marcus: Nope. It’s tacos.

Raquel: Oh man!

Marcus: You were close; they’re from the same truck.

Raquel: (laughs) That’s true!

Marcus: And of course everyone knows a true taco is made-

Both: With corn tortillas!

This is the moment we became best friends.

There you have it for Top Shelf Gaming’s first every Celebrity Miitomo! I had a blast talking to all these talented people  from the first ever Hollywood Comedy Shorts Film Festival in Hollywood and enjoyed the films they were a part of. Please share this if you think we should do more wacky Miitomo interviews and leave a comment with who you’d like to see us interview next!

Marcus created Top Shelf Gaming to celebrate the awesome things about the video game industry while challenging the areas of the video game community that could be improved. He loves playing guitar and eating tacos, but never at the same time.
